In more detail
Driving times are from map distance, not measured by us. Everything else below is judgement, not a figure.
Lusail Marina
15 minutes by road, outside race traffic
The closest base to the gates. After a session that finishes late, the difference between a short run home and a long one in a queue is the difference between comfortably doing three days and giving up on one of them.
Watch out. The newest and least dense of the areas, so there is less within walking distance than the map suggests, and it is the area where race weekend pricing will bite hardest.

West Bay
25 minutes by road, outside race traffic
Central, and the part of the city with the most hotels in one place. When the areas nearer the circuit are gone or priced beyond sense, this is where the choice still is, and it has the widest range of places to eat of any option here.
Watch out. You are committing to a transfer twice a day for three days. That is fine on the metro and a great deal less fine by road once a session ends.

The Pearl
20 minutes by road, outside race traffic
Serviced apartments rather than hotel rooms. For a group of four, one two bedroom apartment is usually a better deal than two hotel rooms, and having a kitchen matters more across a full weekend than it sounds like it will.
Watch out. Apartments are individually let, so what you get varies more than it does at a hotel of the same price. Read the recent reviews rather than the photographs.

Msheireb and old Doha
30 minutes by road, outside race traffic
The part of the trip that is not about racing. Souq Waqif and the museums are here. If someone is coming with you who is not going to the circuit every day, this is the area that gives them a week of their own rather than a wait.
Watch out. The furthest of the city options from the gates.

Near the airport
40 minutes by road, outside race traffic
The value option. If you fly in on Friday and out on Monday, what you save across three nights can pay for a better grandstand seat, which is a trade worth doing the sums on.
Watch out. It is a long way from the circuit and a long way from dinner. Worth it only when the saving is genuinely large, not when it is marginal.
